SOUTH VALLEY 56 – Redwood Empire 10 -Referee: Aruna Ranaweera ARs: John Coppinger, Tony Levitan
65F
and partly sunny at the Morgan Hill Sports Complex with about 150
spectators on one sideline. The first half was a stop-and-start affair
with neither team establishing structure and demonstrating a lack of
discipline indicative of teams unaccustomed to being in the playoffs.
South Valley was slightly more organized and lead 24-10 at the half.
Under the watchful eyes of the AR's and thanks to effective intervention
by the captains, both teams settled down in the second half and played
more attractive rugby with better continuity and flow. With quicker ball
movement, however, South Valley rattled off 32 unanswered points as
Redwood was unable to keep pace. In the end, South Valley dominated, 9
tries to 1. Much thanks to John and Tony for their help as AR's, which
was invaluable for this type of match.

The Northern California Rugby Football Union (NCRFU) in January launched their new website located at http://www.ncrfu.org. Club information and schedules are being put online and they are busy adding more as the season gets going. We're happy to have been a part of this as our website design group, granitebaydigital.com, was selected to work with them as their web designers and webmaster.
Take a test drive of their new site and shoot them an email with your thoughts at their new email address: communications@ncrfu.orgThanks to Rugby Friend Ray Schwartz for sending us a copy of an "old School" NCRFU patch - we'll put it up here for your viewing pleasure. Anyone else have club graphics or images they'd like to share? Please send them to us with their story using this email link. |

There is an upcoming USA Rugby Introducing Rugby Course (Coach Certification Course) on February 26/27 at Rio Linda High School in Sacramento.
Remember that it is the stated goal of the NCYRA that all coaches get certified. This is your opportunity. Also remember that the NCYRA will reimburse all coaches that complete the course, as well as the two on-line modules, and receive their certificate from USAR, up to $100 each (reimbursements are limited, but there are currently many still available, so take advantage of the savings). Several coaches have already taken advantage of this and have been reimbursed.

Rugby is not a CIF-Sanctioned sport
locally, however, several high schools are supporting club teams that
have done quite well. Usually played in the spring months, the area
rugby teams attract a few football players and the fan base has been
growing steadily.
Russell White is the president of Elk Grove
United Rugby Club that will begin play this spring. One of his top
players will be his son, Marcus, who is the kicker/punter for Pleasant
Grove High School’s football team and regularly puts kickoffs into the
end zone.
“There are 36 Rugby clubs in the Sacramento area with
Jesuit and Christian Brothers making the national finals yearly,” White
wrote in an e-mail. “We will be pulling players from all nine Elk Grove
high schools and our goal is to be competing for the national title
within the first couple of years.”
Elk Grove United will be
putting on rugby clinics Oct. 17, Oct. 30 and Nov. 14 at Elk Grove
Regional Park. White added that besides a varsity team and a frosh/soph
team, his group wants to form a junior high-aged team along with age
10-and-under and age 8-and-under rugby squads.
Practices will begin in December, with games January through April. |

USA Rugby
May 24, 2010
SANDY, Utah
– The Sacramento Amazons put on a commanding display to defeat
Fallbrook and win the 2010 USA Rugby Girls’ Under-19 Championship title
as play concluded at Utah’s Rio Tinto Stadium on Sunday.
The Californian sides appeared evenly matched in the opening stages, with Fallbrook’s speed making up for the difference in size. However, it was the Sacramento
team that scored first as Adrianne Rubiaco fought her way over the
line. A poor penalty allowed Fallbrook to put three points on the board,
but shortly after it was again the Amazon No.7 Rubiaco finding a way
through to extend the lead.
However, Amazon continued to hurt themselves by giving away sloppy penalties and after a yellow card, Fallbrook capitalized and closed the gap to 12-10 at the half.
After the break, Amazon applied more
pressure and Tolini Finau took advantage of a Fallbrook mistake to take
the ball in for a try. With the Warriors trying to find a way back
into the game, Amazon showed tremendous resilience to continually stop
the Fallbrook attack. And as the match went on, Amazons power began to
wear down the Warrior defense, two tries from Sauliloa Fauolo, another
from Elizabeth Green secured the victory and a first National
Championship for the California outfit.
“We worked hard all season and the girls’ had to overcome some serious setbacks in the game. I’m so happy
for them, it’s always been our goal to win a national championship, and
I’m just delighted the girls’ have seen that hard work really pays off,
because that’s what we teach” Sacramento Amazon Manager, Sefesi Green
said after the victory.
In the day’s earlier matches, Portland comfortably defeated Lowland, 37-0 to capture seventh place and last year’s champions DSHA claimed third in its match against Brookfield. In the battle for fifth, Kent beat West Carrol 17-5 in what was a fairly close encounter.
The match put an end to a hugely successful weekend - fantastic rugby
was on display all around and the total number of paid fans in
attendance reached approximatley 5,700. |
