Stanford Beats Santa Clara, Clinches Playoff Berth

posted Apr 8, 2011 10:34 AM by Kyle Kreun

This weekend Stanford booked their flights to Santa Barbara for the west championships, with a solid win over a team that has come a long way, Santa Clara. Stanford traveled to Santa Clara and took care of business winning 39-18

Here Coach Matt Sherman speaks about the game, "I'm very proud of our team. We had a solid performance today to beat an improved Santa Clara team, but more importantly we have made steady improvements all season to be able to win our league and now compete in the playoffs. Nonetheless, we also believe that we have far more to give, and great room to improve further, and I'm excited to see how much further we can develop until the playoffs in four weeks."

2nd XV lost 19-17
Stanford 2nd XV played well almost bringing home a win against a tough Santa Clara team. There were great individual efforts especially from fullback Tyler Shean who scored two tries.

Stanford over Chico, 34-15
Stanford & Sac State remained tied at 4-1 on top of Division 1 after this weekends play. It may all come down to the one point Stanford was able to get by being within a try in their only loss to Sac State when they met for the second time two weeks ago.

Stanford kept their one point advantage this weekend with a 34-15 win over Chico at home. Stanford got on the board first 13 minutes in with their #15 Henderson scoring and Lijenquist converting. The score remained 7-0 until a flurry of activity in the last 6 minutes of the half with Chico getting on the board with a penalty 35 minutes in. Stanford answered back only 2 minutes later when #7 Vernon put one in. Stanford closed out the first half with one more try by #8 Polk (both converted by Lijenquist) to lead 21-3 at the break.

Just 2 minutes into the Second half #15 Henderson scored his second try. At the 50th minute of the match Lijenquist scored for Stanford on a penalty. Chico scored on one penalty and once again in the 56th minute on a converted try but Stanford finished the match with the last score at minute 60 - a try by #6 Maier to make the final score 34-15.

Stanford Coach Matt Sherman seemed to be please with what he saw, "I think we put together one of our better performances of the season today, and it’s good to see improvement in a number of areas.  However, we still had lapses where both our concentration and effort relaxed.   We will look to continue to improve and put in a more complete 80 minute performance that we’re capable of our next time out.’

Their next (and last) conference match will be vs. Santa Clara at Santa Clara on Saturday, April 2 - they control their own destiny with the ability to wrap up their conference with a win with 4 tries.

Sac State 59, Santa Clara 19
Sac State is doing everything they can to stay in the race, putting another W on the board this week with a resounding 40 point margin win over Santa Clara.  They will meet Chico next week and try to focus on getting a win with 4 tries to keep the heat on Stanford in the points race that may be the decider if these two teams both end up with 5-1 records. Sacramento State Vs. Chico State Rugby - Feb. 26, 2011

by Kyle Kreun, NorCalRugby
(Apologies to the unknown players as I'm typing this report up without the aid of rosters or stat sheets - I'll try to come back and add them once I get the data)

With weather predicted to include possible snow, we were treated to a beautiful day at Sac State as they hosted Chico State in a battle of two squads ranked in the top 20 by Rugby Magazine.

I arrived late to the match, missing the first 3 points by Chico- but just in time to see Sac #8 dive in for their first try, Sac then got a second just 6 minutes later to move to 12-3. Chico's #3 came back with a converted try less than 5 minutes later to make it 12-10 and I knew I would not be able to stay on one end of the pitch if I wanted to shoot all the action this game had in store.

The second half started with Chico kicking for 3 and taking the lead 13-12 but that lead lasted all of 2 minutes before
Sac States' #3 barreled in for a try which was followed 6 minute later by another after a great run by #17 to make it 24-13. Chico scored 10 minutes later with a converted try and the match was close with a 24-20 score. It took Sac State 3 minutes to increase the lead with another try that after a successful conversion moved the score to 31-20. Six minutes later Chico returned the favor as their #3 scored once again. The conversion attempt went left and Sac State would get 3 more points for the final 34-25 score to end a great match and one great win for the Sac State Hornets.

Saturdays Scores
Sac State 34 Chico State 25 (A Side)
Sac State 64 Chico State 24 (B Side)

February 13, 2011 - Santa Rosa JC met Sierra Community College on Sat., Feb. 12th in Roseville, CA for a junior college showdown in a match that will help decide the Nor Cal northern division champion. In a fast paced, hard hitting match SRJC came out on top with a 22 to 15 win.

SRJC jumped into the lead in the 23rd min. into the game. SRJC's forward pack pushed a rolling mall into the try zone with the ball being placed down by both Thomas Lyons and Bryce Paulson. Sierra converted a penalty kick with 3 min. remaining in the half. The half was dominated by Sierra, who was constantly at or near the try line but unable to convert.

The 2nd half started with another Sierra assault toward the SRJC try zone, but SRJC's defense remained staunch. SRJC stole a ball out of a ruck and their fullback and winger led a 40 meter attack out wide and Tyler Laron scored in the 55th min. The try was converted by Austin Welch.

Sierra came out fast after that and their #14 scored an unconverted try near the corner on a nice run in the 60th min. This brought Sierra to within 2 with a score of 12 to 10.

SIerra went ahead with 11 min. to play, when SRJC was unable to control a Sierra grubber kick into the try zone and a Sierra player was able to apply downward pressure to the ball for the try. The kick was not made, so Sierra was in good shape leading 15 to 12.

The last 11 min. were played at a frenzied pace. SRJC was awarded a penalty at the 72 min. mark and Austin Welch put the ball between the uprights to tie the game.

With 2 min. to play, Eric Williams, SRJC scrummy, put a well placed kick into Sierra territory and Austin Welch picked it up and ran through a couple of Sierra tacklers to the try line and the final tally in the game.

Welch converted his try for the final 22 to 15 score. This puts SRJC at 3-0 in league play and Sierra at 2-1.

The two teams meet again in 2 weeks at SRJC's For Pete's Sake Field for a rematch.
